A FREE LOCAL GUIDE · THE GHATS

Meet Kashi at the water’s edge.

The ghats are living neighborhoods, not just viewpoints. Start slowly, watch the river and leave space for the people whose everyday life unfolds here.

01

A gentle morning route

Begin near Assi Ghat and walk north along accessible stretches. Steps can be steep or slippery; wear grippy shoes and carry water. River levels may interrupt the route.

02

Watching the evening aarti

Dashashwamedh is a well-known place to watch the evening ritual. Arrive early, agree any seating or boat fee beforehand and keep pathways clear. During Dev Deepawali 2026, standard routes are often heavily restricted.

03

Respect at cremation ghats

Manikarnika and Harishchandra are sacred working cremation grounds. Do not photograph ceremonies or grieving families. Observe quietly and never treat a funeral as an attraction.
